How the ring works

The essentials — what it works with, how you control it, how it charges, and how it fits. Honest about what's still on the bench.

Development status. The ring is an engineering prototype. Anything below tagged provisional is still being verified on real hardware and may change.

Connectivity

The ring joins the smart home you already have — no hub of its own. You set it up and shape its gestures in the V1 companion app; day to day it lives inside the ecosystem you already run.

Protocols matter over thread — the ring joins your home's low-power thread mesh as a standard switch. bluetooth is used during setup only; day-to-day control runs entirely over thread.
Works with Home Assistant — development-tested today. Apple Home and Google Home — certification pending. provisional
You need A thread border router (most modern hubs and some phones have one) and the free V1 companion app for setup and configuration.
Control model Local by design — gestures map to scenes, lights and devices on your own network, with no cloud round-trip required.

Room awareness

The ring can tell your home which room you're in, so a single gesture does the right thing in the room you're actually standing in. provisional

How it feels Press in the bedroom and the bedroom lights respond — not the whole house. The same shortcut works in every room.

Wireless charging

The ring has no charging port and no contacts — nothing to line up, nothing to wear out.

Method Wireless charging: set the ring on its pad and it charges.
While charging The pad shows the ring's battery level and charging status.

Gesture input

Buttons plus a tap sensor, combined into a rich but learnable set of gestures — each one you can feel without looking.

Buttons Three domed buttons under a seamless soft-touch surface — single, double, triple and long presses.
Tap / knock A built-in accelerometer turns a knock of the ring against a surface into its own gesture.
Combos Buttons and knocks combine — "press 1, then knock twice" is its own first-class gesture.

Battery & power

A tiny curved cell, and a ring that sleeps between the moments you actually use it.

Battery Curved 15.5 mAh cell, shaped to hug the inside of the band.
Battery life Weeks of typical use is the target — this is an estimate until it's measured on the finished ring. provisional

Design & sizing

The design target: a metal band with a seamless soft-touch inner surface — one continuous piece, with no ports, seams or gaskets. Final construction is being worked out with the manufacturing partner. provisional

Materials Anodized-metal shell; moulded soft-touch membrane with domed buttons — target construction, pending manufacturing validation. provisional
Sizing Prototype inner diameter ≈21.5 mm (US size 12).

Software updates

Wireless updates are planned — the goal is software that stays current without ever plugging anything in.

Delivery Updates will arrive wirelessly. Not enabled on current prototypes. planned
Protection The update pipeline is built for signed, end-to-end encrypted images so only genuine software can run on the ring; production signing keys ship with production hardware. planned
Items marked provisional depend on hardware that is still being verified; planned marks capabilities that are designed in but not yet enabled.
